CITY OF LIBERTY ON TARGET WITH AWARDED FUNDS PROJECT

Somerset, KY – TOUR Southern and Eastern Kentucky (TOUR SEKY) held its annual National Tourism Week event May 11, 2010 at The Center for Rural Development in Somerset, Kentucky. During the ceremony TOUR awarded more than $400,000 through its Community Initiative in Tourism for You (C.I.T.Y) and Let’s Paint the Town programs. The City of Liberty was the top winning city. The city was awarded $30,000 for a revitalization project in its downtown historic district. Blaine Staat with the Casey County Chamber of Commerce applied for the funding through the C.I.T.Y. program. Read more »

MIDDLESBORO NAMED AFFORDABLE FALL FOLIAGE TOWN

Somerset, KY – TOUR Southern and Eastern Kentucky (TOUR SEKY) is excited to announce Travel and Leisure Magazine named Middlesboro, KY as one of the best affordable fall foliage towns. The magazine recommended 10 small communities across the nation that are less crowded and more affordable than other fall hot spots. The article noted Middlesboro’s historic downtown and its proximity to the Cumberland Gap. The article also featured a hotel in each recommended community. The Cumberland Manor Bed and Breakfast was the featured hotel for Middlesboro. Read more »

TOUR SEKY INVITES YOU TO “DO IT IN THE DIRT”

Somerset, KY – TOUR Southern and Eastern Kentucky (TOUR SEKY) is excited to announce its first ever “Do it in the Dirt” Off Road Adventure Ride will be held October 9, 2010 at the Black Mountain Off Road Adventure Area in Harlan County, KY. TOUR SEKY will be at the park 9:00 a.m. – Noon ET. The first 500 participants with a valid park permit will receive free gifts. Once at the park, participants are free to ride on their own. “TAKE A HIKE” FOR TOURISM

Somerset, KY – Despite the rain, nearly 100 hikers gathered September 11, 2010 for the second annual “Take a Hike” for Tourism at Cumberland Gap National Historical Park in Middlesboro, KY. The event was presented by TOUR SEKY in partnership with The Cumberland Gap National Historical Park, Friends of the Park, Pineville Community Hospital, Middlesboro Appalachian Regional Hospital and Bell County Tourism. “Take a Hike” was created to make people aware of the importance of adventure tourism and health awareness. TOUR SEKY SEEKS SCHOOLS TO PARTICIPATE IN THE “PEOPLES GARDEN PILOT PROGRAM"

Somerset, KY – TOUR Southern and Eastern Kentucky (TOUR SEKY) is seeking participants for a potential project called the “Peoples Garden Pilot Program.” The project will create a garden that will supply food to two schools in each county. TOUR SEKY is looking for 12 schools in southern and eastern Kentucky that would like to participate in this program. TOUR SEKY is also looking for at least two (2) schools in West Virginia that would like to participate. Eligible counties include: Lincoln, Mingo, Wyoming and McDowell. Read more »

LOCAL ART TO DECORATE DOWNTOWN LONDON DURING THE 2010 “WORLD CHICKEN FESTIVAL”

Somerset, KY – TOUR Southern and Eastern Kentucky (TOUR SEKY) is excited to announce unique banners will welcome visitors to downtown London, KY during the 2010 “World Chicken Festival”.

Area artist and students will paint chickens and roosters onto banners that will hang on street lamps from Carter Drive to 7th Street in the Renaissance District. The banners will be on display beginning September 13th and will remain until the end of the Chicken Festival. The London Downtown Main Street Program received a grant through TOUR SEKY to help fund this project. Read more »
